The core Foam on the balsa rail firewire's is only 1 lb density so there is a lot of air trapped inside the foam structure. The valve allows the core foam to breathe which reduces the pressure on the sandwich construction. There is considerably debate as to whether the valves are absolutely necessary but we believe it prolongs the life of the materials.

The valve breathes automatically so there is no need to adjust it. In fact, don't tamper with it at all. It should be noted that the valve will hold about a teaspoon of water and as the board breathes, small droplets might appear to be coming out of the board. However this is just the water that sits above the goretex membrane inside the screw itself.
